In the year of 2002, I received a generous grant from the Burdock / Burn foundation to complete a series of paintings based upon the juxtaposition of imagery related to war and peace.
The project was not meant as a political stance towards the Iraq war. It was rather meant to show feelings of loss, confusion, anger, longing, and fear as related to war in general. Images of peace were then to be inserted, in order to show the contrast of the ideas and allow viewers to come to their own conclusions.
The idea of war and peace can relate not only to political crises, but can also been seen as internal or personal struggle. We all battle with war and peace within ourselves.
I am continuing to work on this series.
I am a painter, a teacher, and a father. I have been a professional artist for thirteen years now and am still fascinated by the seemingly endless possibilities within the creative mind. Using imagery as a visual language to discuss the inner most sanctums of the mind and spirit, is an energizing experience as well as a fundamental form of human communication.
